11 ar­rested at Ra­bale for gam­bling

As many as 11 peo­ple were ar­rested af­ter po­lice con­ducted a raid at a gam­bling den at Ra­bale on Mon­day night.

Act­ing on a tip- off, a po­lice team led by deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (zone 1) Sha­haji Umap raided the gam­bling den at Taushil Naka.

They rounded up the peo­ple who were caught play­ing cards.

They have also seized Rs43,370 from their pos­ses­sion.

Two per­sons who had been il­le­gally run­ning the den have been i den­ti­fied as Madan Shankar Cha­han, 36, and Vinod Mans­ingh Rathod, 25, both res­i­dents of Ra­bale. Both of them have been ar­rested too.

“When our per­son­nel reached the spot, the sus­pects were found play­ing cards. We ar­rested all of them when we learnt that they were play­ing for money,” Umap said.

The sus­pects have been booked un­der sec­tions 4 and 5 of Bom­bay Pro­hi­bi­tion of Gam­bling Act.

For pre­vent­ing il­le­gal ac­tiv­i­ties be­ing run in the city, Umap had formed a spe­cial squad around three months ago com­pris­ing around 10 of­fi­cials.

The squad has so far con­ducted raids at sev­eral video par­lours, en­ter­tain­ment clubs, mas­sage parolours and lot­tery shops for al­low­ing im­moral ac­tiv­i­ties and ar­rested more than 200 peo­ple.

“We are also tak­ing ac­tion on peo­ple drink­ing in the open and peo­ple run­ning flesh trade in from rented places,” Umap said.

“We ap­peal to the city res­i­dents to in­form us if they get to know about any il­licit ac­tiv­ity go­ing on in their neigh­bour­hood. Iden­tity of the in­form­ers will be kept se­cret,” added the deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice.
