Revamped 6 months ago, Kalyan pond turns dump yard again
When the KalyanDombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) rejuvenated the Vitthalwadi pond in July last year, it gave the residents another place to spend their leisure time.
Six months on, the water body is back to Square One. Lack of maintenance has turned the pond into a green mass, defunct fountains and dump yard.
The KDMC had inaugurated the revamped pond with much funfare and visitors flocked at the new hangout.
However, the pond’s beautification can hardly be seen now for which the KDMC has spent Rs53 lakh.
But, the civic body’s effort went down the drain as the residents were back to dumping waste into the pond. “The residents are to be blamed for the pathetic state of the pond. They dump garbage during the night when nobody is watching,” said Madhukar Patil, 43, a resident of Kolsewadi in Kalyan east.
The municipal corporation used to clean the pond once a year. The water body was used to immerse idols during festivals. The residents themselves realized that the state of the pond was worsening. They demanded the KDMC to beautify it.
A compound wall was built around the pond, with footpaths for the visitors. Colourful fountains added to the beauty. But, all this did not last long.
“The fountain stopped working because of the unclean water in the pond. We have sanctioned a work order for cleaning and repairing the fountain. The work will begin next week,” said Shantilal Rathod , KDMC D ward officer. 1. The pond in Vitthalwadi is in a pathetic condition. The water has turned green.
