Relatives of a 27-yearold woman staged a protest at the Shastrinagar civic hospital here on Thursday demanding action against doctors who they alleged had left a swab of cotton inside her after she had a baby.

KDMC health officer Smita Rode, while promising to look into the matter said it was normal practice to stuff cotton and that it had to be removed after 24 hours.

“May be the woman did not turn up for the further treatment. I will, however, look into the matter and take needful action. We have not denied any sort of treatment to her,” Rode said.

On December 27, Londe was admitted at the Shastrinagar hospital and she had a normal delivery, giving birth to a daughter, on December 29.

“Although she had a normal delivery while controlling the blood flow they stuffed cotton inside. The cotton was not removed before the portion was stitched. This way a handful of cotton was left inside her,” said Vinaya Patil who is a corporator at Dombivli and the woman’s relative.

As the woman later complained of severe pain, she was taken to a private doctor and a sonography revealed that a cotton swab was still inside.

She got the cotton removed by the private doctor immediately, but since she could not afford private treatment she again approached the Shastrinagar hospital.

“The hospital admitted her for a day and asked her to get discharged without even healing her entire pain. She informed me about this and that is why I and other relatives thronged the hospital premises on Thursday,” Patil said.
