40-FOOT-LONG DEAD WHALE WASHED ASHORE AT JUHU

The car­cass of a 40-foot-long male Bryde’s whale, weigh­ing around 20 tonnes, washed up at Juhu beach on Thurs­day night. This is the ninth in­stance of car­casses of large marine mam­mals found in the city since last year. Of­fi­cials from the state for­est dept’s man­grove cell told HT the whale was iden­ti­fied as a ful­ly­grown Bryde’s whale, which is pro­tected un­der sched­ule 1 of the Wildlife Pro­tec­tion Act.

The whale ap­par­ently died of nat­u­ral causes in the deep seas around three days ago. The body was washed ashore at Juhu on Thurs­day night.
