FDA official, cop get show- cause notice
THANE: The Thane district court has issued a show-cause notice to an official of Food and Drug Administration and a police inspector for destroying seized gutkha worth more than Rs1.70 lakh without taking permission from court.
In March 2014, the FDA officials seized gutka from a person in Uttan, Bhayander, and filed a complaint with the police.
During t he hearing, t he court told the FDA and the police department to produce the seized goods. But, it was shocked to know that the seized goods had been destroyed.
Taking a serious view of the lapse by officials, assistant sessions judge NN Srimangale ordered t hat a show- cause notice be issued to the two officials.
The next date of hearing is February 3 and they are supposed to give their replies by then.
On August 5 and 6, 2014, the FDA destroyed the seized gutkha worth crores at a facility at Navi Mumbai.
When the court wanted the FDA officials to show the seized goods, they were unable to do so.
The seized gutkha had been destroyed without permission from the court.
Taking a serious note of the flouting of rules, the judge ordered issuing show- cause notices to the FDA administra- tive officer Manick Jadhav and police inspector in charge of the Uttan police station under Thane district rural police Priyatama Muthe.
The prosecution is likely to file an application in court under section 201, asking the court to make the two officials an accused in the case.
