Two special trains cancelled, women commuters upset
THANE: The Central Railway has cancelled two services of women special trains in its new timetable which was started from January 26.
This had irked many women passengers.
Two women special trains on Thane- Vashi harbour route which used to ply during peak hours have been cancelled.
According to the old timetable, two women special trains Thane- Panvel ( 9.14am) and Thane- Vashi ( 9.50 am) plied during peak hour, making travel smooth for women passengers.
At 5.42pm, there was a women’s special train from Panvel and Vashi.
The railways has cancelled both the special trains and has reserved the first three coaches of all trains for women.
Women passengers have demanded restarting the women’s s pecial t r ain on Thane-Vashi route.
“Thane-Vashi route has huge traffic load during peak hours and women’s special trains made commuting easy. Now, we have to travel in crowded trains,” said Swapnaja Raut, 36, who travels by train daily to reach her Sanpada office.
A railway official said that the trains were cancelled as the special trains did not have many takers. “Even men used to travel in this local. So we have decided to keep first three coaches reserved for women. Men too have been demanding more trains,” he said.
“The 5.42pm women special train from Panvel to Thane was convenient for women passengers. The special trains are always full. The railways must rethink about its decision,” Said Smitha Nair, 42, who travels to Nerul every day.
Thane Railway Pravashi Sangh has supported the decision to cancel the two trains.
Its president Nandkumar Deshmukh said, “Women’s special trains were always empty. This delayed other passengers. The railways also has to think about passenger load. Three coaches reserved for women passengers. This is good decision by the railways.”
