Groom among 5 held for dowry harassment
NAVI MUMBAI: The Rabale police arrested five persons for allegedly demanding dowry and attacking relatives of t he bride’s family at a wedding on Friday night.
The bridegroom, who is a security official at a private firm in Worli, and his father are among those arrested.
According to the police, the wedding was arranged by two families from Uttar Pradesh at a community hall at Sector 1 in Airoli.
When the rituals were going around 11.30pm, t he bridegroom, Sheilesh Gupta, 24, and his father Dayanand, 58, asked for Rs1 lakh dowry from the bride’s family. They also threatened call off the wedding if the cash was not paid on the spot.
“The accused had already taken Rs2 lakh dowry just a few days before the wedding. So when they asked for another Rs1 lakh, it came as a shock for the bride’s family. They said they would not be able to give the cash and requested not to call off the wedding,” said R Katkar, senior police inspector of Rabale police station.
“This enraged the groom and their relatives and they started abusing the bride’s family at the wedding hall. When the girl’s uncle asked them to calm down, they assaulted him. He suffered injuries to his head and was admitted to a hospital,” he said.
The bride’s family called off the wedding and approached the police. “We arrested the bridegroom, his f ather and three of their relatives. They have been booked for attempt to murder and dowry harassment. They are now in our custody,” Katkar said.
