Vashi man loses ` 1L to cy­ber­crim­i­nals

NAVI MUM­BAI: A 46-year-old res­i­dent of Vashi fell prey to cy­ber­crim­i­nals af­ter some uniden­ti­fied peo­ple used his credit card to shop on­line. The man lost Rs1.03 lakh.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, the cul­prits some­how took the de­tails of his card and then used it for on­line shop­ping.

They had sub­mit­ted fake email-id and phone num­ber to en­sure that the vic­tim did not re­ceive any mes­sage or email about the trans­ac­tion.

“The cul­prits used the cards be­tween Jan­uary 14 and 17. How­ever, the vic­tim was not aware of this as he had not re­ceived any mes­sage about it. On Jan­uary 25, when he vis­ited the bank to ask for the state­ment, he came to know about the crime,” said Prat­i­bha Shendage, po­lice in­spec­tor from Navi Mum­bai cy­ber cell.

“He then checked the email ad­dress and phone num­ber avail­able with the bank and learnt that those were not pro­vided by him. Later, he came to us and reg­is­tered an FIR,” she said.

The po­lice have reg­is­tered a case un­der sec­tions 419 and 420 of the In­dian Pe­nal Code and sec­tions 43(b), 66, 66(c) and 66(d) of the IT Act.

“We are record­ing state­ments of the bank of­fi­cials. Our team is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the mat­ter and hope to solve it soon,” Shendge added.
