Two days after a 25-year-old woman died after falling from an overcrowded train between Dombivli and Kopar railway stations, passengers protested outside Dombivli station.

On Wednesday, representatives of passengers’ associations gathered at Dombivli with their mouths tied with black ribbons. After the silent protest, they demanded the railways to increase more services from the railway station.

On Monday, a commuter from Dombivli, Dhanashree Godve, died after falling off an overcrowded local. Godve got on to the 8.40am fast local from Dombivi railway station to go to CST. She worked as an accountant in a private firm on Peddar Road. She was standing on the footboard as the train was crowded. Her head hit a pole and she fell on the track. She had sustained severe injuries and died.

“The railway was supposed to start shuttle services to Kalyan, Kasara and Thane five years ago. However, nothing has been done. We have had several meetings with railway officials, demanding them to take measures to ease congestion at suburban rail- Commuters, passengers’ associations and local politicians protest outside Dombivli station on Wednesday.

way stations. We have decided to stop attending meetings,” said Lata Argade, vice-president of railway pravasi mahasangh. Godve’s death is the second such incident in the last three months.

I n N ove m b e r last ye a r, Bhavesh Nakate, 21, f rom Dombivli died after falling off a crowded local train. The incident went viral as a commuter had recorded it on his cell phone. This highlighted the dangerous travel which commuters have to go through every day. After this incident, too, commuters had staged a protest for several days demanding an more trains from Dombivli railway station.

A recent RTI query revealed that Dombilvi railway station is the most crowded station on the Central line with 2.33 lakh passengers every day.

“Most trains coming from Kar j at, Khopoli, Kasara, Badlapur and Kalyan to Dombivli railway station are packed by the time they reach Dombivli. It’s difficult boarding a fast local. There is a need for fast trains starting from Dombivli,” said Shailaja Pandey, 31, who travels from Dombivli to Kurla daily.

The passengers’ associations demanded quick action by railway authorities or face more protests.
