MAN RUN OVER BY TAXI ON SION- PANVEL HIGHWAY
A 50-year-old man from Panvel died in a road accident after he was hit by a taxi on Sion- Panvel highway near Kharghar on Monday.
According to t he police, Kiran Kumar Ogwekar, came to Kharghar for some work around 10.30am. As he was crossing the road near Belpada bus stop, a taxi which was on its way to Panvel, hit him.
“Ogwekar suffered severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body in the body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by some local residents, but he died there after sometime,” said a police officer from Kharghar police station.
The police arrested the taxi driver Santosh Baibhate, 36, from the spot. “We think he somehow lost his control on the vehicle and ran over the victim. We don’t think this is a case of drink-driving,” the officer said.
The police have booked the driver under section 304a of the Indian Penal Code and section 134 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
As many as 922 road accidents took place in the city in 2015 as opposed to 828 accidents registered in 2014. Likewise, a total of 321 people lost their lives in 303 fatal accidents last year against 297 deaths in 309 fatal accidents in 2014.
