MAN RUN OVER BY TAXI ON SION- PAN­VEL HIGH­WAY

A 50-year-old man from Pan­vel died in a road ac­ci­dent af­ter he was hit by a taxi on Sion- Pan­vel high­way near Kharghar on Mon­day.

Ac­cord­ing to t he po­lice, Ki­ran Ku­mar Og­wekar, came to Kharghar for some work around 10.30am. As he was cross­ing the road near Bel­pada bus stop, a taxi which was on its way to Pan­vel, hit him.

“Og­wekar suf­fered se­vere in­juries on his head and other parts of his body in the body. He was rushed to a nearby hos­pi­tal by some lo­cal res­i­dents, but he died there af­ter some­time,” said a po­lice of­fi­cer from Kharghar po­lice sta­tion.

The po­lice ar­rested the taxi driver Santosh Baib­hate, 36, from the spot. “We think he some­how lost his con­trol on the ve­hi­cle and ran over the vic­tim. We don’t think this is a case of drink-driv­ing,” the of­fi­cer said.

The po­lice have booked the driver un­der sec­tion 304a of the In­dian Pe­nal Code and sec­tion 134 and 184 of the Mo­tor Ve­hi­cles Act.

As many as 922 road ac­ci­dents took place in the city in 2015 as op­posed to 828 ac­ci­dents reg­is­tered in 2014. Like­wise, a to­tal of 321 peo­ple lost their lives in 303 fa­tal ac­ci­dents last year against 297 deaths in 309 fa­tal ac­ci­dents in 2014.
