Five days after a minor fire broke out at Adharwadi dumping ground, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has decided to install closed-circuit television cameras on the premises.

On Thursday, the municipal corporation called a meeting to know the cause of the fire, which broke out on Sunday.

An inquiry, with help of environment experts, revealed that the cause of fire was because of methane emission. The civic body has planned to install CCTV at the dumping site to check such incidents in future.

The saturated Adharwadi dumping ground in Kalyan west has added to the pollution in the area and the residents have been opposing it for a long time.

“We had conducted an inquiry which showed that the cause of fire was because of the emission of methane. However, to check whether such fires are natural or sabotage, we have planned to install CCTV in the entire area of the dumping ground,” said E Ravendiran, KDMC commissioner.

Ravendiran also has plans for a scientific closure of the 40-year-old dumping ground.

“We have started the process to scientifically close the dumping site. We are waiting for the approval of from the standing committee. Once approved, we will start the work for its closure,” said Ravendiran.

Last year, a man set fire at Adharwadi dump yard and a resident managed to take a photo. But, the civic body could not gather more evidence about the incident. “With the installation of CCTV cameras, the civic body would be able to keep a watch on the site. Any initiative would be a major relief for us,” said Malini Patil, 53, who lives near the dumping site.

Residents have been protesting against the dumping site as it emits a bad odour. The garbage, which is often set on fire, causes air pollution.

The civic body has been using the dumping ground since 1984. A total of 700 metric tonnes of garbage is being dumped there every day.

The KDMC has been struggling to decide on its waste disposal system. More so, with the Bombay high court’s ruling last year. The court had directed the KDMC to stop approving housing projects until it solves the waste disposal problem.

The civic body had then decided to develop a 35-acre plot at Umbarde which had been proposed eight years ago. Once the Adharwadi dumping ground is shut, the civic body has plans to start new two dumping sites at Barave and Umbarde.

“After the Adharwadi dumping site is shut, we will start dumping at both the sites. We have already started working towards the plan,” added Ravendiran.
