Woman, son robbed people by throwing dirt on them, held
APMC: The APMC police has nabbed a mother-son duo who allegedly looted people after throwing dirt on them and confusing them. Police have recovered Rs 3,000 that they had looted in similar fashion.
The accused have been identified as Chaudamma Boi (40) and her son Ulgappa (20).
According to deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Shahji Umap, “There had been reports of some people being looted after dirt was thrown on them. Under the guidance of ACP Arun Walture, a special squad was formed under senior police inspector Maya More and police inspector Pramod Roman. Police sub-inspector Sunil Tarmale and Deepak Kadbane were part of the squad.”
Umap said, “We learnt that the mother and duo were active in APMC area especially where there are banks located. People going to banks to deposit cash or withdrawing from it were targeted.”
Explaining the modus operandi, Umap said, “Once they identified their target, they would throw at him a paste of biscuit that had been dipped in water. People mistook it for feces and would get upset and disturbed.”
He added, “One of the two accused would then flee with the bag. The duo would then offer to help and ensure that the person parted with the bag he was carrying to clean his clothes.”
The police kept a watch for the duo and on February 9, it received information on the duo coming to APMC area. A trap was laid and the duo was arrested.
Umap said, “Apart from Rs 3,000 recovered from them, we also found an itching powder on them. The powder if thrown on a person, leads to severe itching which leads to the person putting down whatever he is carrying and scratching his body.”
Umap added: “This would given an opportunity to the duo to get hold of the bag. The powder we have learnt was sourced from the jungle.”
