Police raid two gambling dens at Nerul, arrest 22
NAVI MUMBAI: As many as 22 people were arrested after police conducted a raid at two gambling dens at Turbhe MIDC and Nerul on Monday night.
Acting on a tip- off, a police team led by deputy commissioner of police( zone 1) Shahaji Umap raided the gambling den at Turbhe Naka and arrested 13 people. Bhaskar Shetty, 44, who was running the den, is also among the arrested.
“When out people reached the spot, the suspects were found playing cards. We arrested all of them when we learnt that they were playing for money,” Umap said.
After some time the police received another tip- off and raided another gambling den at Nerul. They arrested nine people there. All the suspects have been booked under sections 12a of Bombay Prohibition of Gambling Act.
For preventing illegal activi- ties being run in the city, Umap had for med a special squad around three months ago comprising around 10 officials.
The squad has conducted raids at several video parlours, entertainment clubs, massage parlours and lottery shops to check illegal activities and has arrested more than 200 people till now.
“We are also taking action on people drinking in the open and people running flesh trade from rented places,” Umap said.
“We appeal to the city residents to i nfor m us if t hey get to know about any illegal activities going on in their neighbourhood. Identity of the informers will be kept secret,” he added.
