Ferry fare from Uran to Alibaug hiked
Travel between Alibaug and Uran talukas is f acilitated through water transport between Karanja and Rewas. It enables covering of the distance in just 15 minutes from Uran to Alibaug.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) recently increased the passenger tax from Re1 to Rs 2. This has led to the total fare now increasing from Rs12.50 to Rs13.50.
A few months ago, the ferry fare had been increased by Rs5. Now, the additional increase of Re1 has upset the passengers.
Since Alibaug is the headquarters of Raigad district, a lot of people have to travel from Uran to Alibaug which is 60 km by road. It leads to a lot of wastage of time and money.
Hence, more than 800 passengers travel in this manner from Uran to Alibaug every day.
Vilas Bhagat, a local resident, said: “One wonders for what MMB has been raising the fare. It first needs to provide proper service before announcing such hikes.”
The local passenger association has demanded that the hike should be withdrawn immediately. Nitin Koli, MMB, port official, said: “MMB levies Re1 as tax every day from each passenger. Now, MMB has added a cess of Re 1 to the tax.”
He added, “MMB is doing all it can to provide efficient service to passengers. Last year, even during the monsoon the passengers did not face any difficulty and travelled safely.”
A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE FERRY FARE HAD BEEN INCREASED BY RS 5
