PAN­VEL: Pan­vel Mu­nic­i­pal Coun­cil ( PMC) for the third year in a row or­gan­ised ‘ Geet va Powada Gayan Spardha’ in Pan­vel on Thurs­day to spread aware­ness on the life of Shivaji Ma­haraj. The pro g ramme en­tailed bal­lads in praise of the Maratha war­rior.

On Fri­day, vis­i­tors will wit­ness a grand rally to com­mem­o­rate the Shivaji’s birth an­niver­sary.

The pro­gramme was held at Vasudev Balwant Phadke au­di­to­rium in Pan­vel. More than 50 teams par­tic­i­pated in the com­pe­ti­tion. Th­ese in­cluded stu­dents of 11 PMC schools.

PMC pres­i­dent Charusheela Gharat said, “While the rally on Shiv Jayanti has been held in Pan­vel for years, three years ago we de­cided to con­duct the Powada pro­gramme.”

She said, “We have had ex­cel­lent re­sponse with the num­ber of par­tic­i­pants in­creas­ing ev­ery year.”

Vaib­hav Gharat, one of the judges who has also given over 250 per­for­mances all over the state, said, “I was a par­tic­i­pant in the first year here and it is great to be a judge of this com­pe­ti­tion that has grown over the years.”

“The rally on Fri­day will start at 8.30am with the gar­land­ing of Shivaji Ma­haraj’s statue,” said Charusheela.
