Corruption by contractors laying Mumbai’s roads may be deeper than thought, with an ongoing probe indicating the scam could be running into crores of rupees — and may become larger than last year’s desilting scam.

Sources close to the probe said malpractices were found in all 30 roads civic official have inspected so far. Under the scanner are more than 200 roads, whose repair and construction costs run up to Rs2,000 crore.

In all 30 roads inspected so far, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) officials found contractors using substandard material to lay the roads’ foundation.

“The sub- base ( foundation) of the road was filled with soil instead of concrete or other material listed in the contracts. This will lead to bad quality roads. In some cases, 90% of the sub-base was flawed, in some others, only 10% was flawed. We may give the benefit of doubt to the ones where the quantum of irregularity was less, but those where major flaws were noticed will have to face serious action,” said a senior officer.
