MAYOR’S REMARK IN GENERAL BODY MEETING ANGERS OPPOSITION
CBD BELAPUR: Members of the Opposition in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) accused mayor Sudhakar Sonawane of not allowing them to speak about minutes not being tabled and other proposals in the general body meeting on Saturday.
As soon as t he meeting began, opposition leader Vijay Chougule demanded that the minutes of the last meeting be tabled. He also asked if a pending resolution of January would be brought for approval or be deemed as approved.
Chougule asked NMMC secretary Chitra Baviskar to reply to his demand. Other opposition corporators too raised the issue.
As the opposition upped the ante, Sonawane intervened and said, “This house functions under my authority. Whatever answers are required, will be answered by me not the secretary.”
Upset by the remark, the opposition members cornered Sonawane. The mayor called for the resolutions on the agenda and got them passed by the house.
The opposition demanded to speak on the issue of property tax and objected to the resolution concerning it being passed without allowing them speak.
Sonawane said the resolution had been approved and so he will not allow any discussion on it. This led to opposition leaders squatting on the floor in protest against the mayor.
Seeing the aggression, the mayor announced lunch break and adjourned the meeting.
