MAYOR’S RE­MARK IN GEN­ERAL BODY MEET­ING ANGERS OP­PO­SI­TION

Mem­bers of the Op­po­si­tion in Navi Mum­bai Mu­nic­i­pal Cor­po­ra­tion (NMMC) a c c u s e d mayo r Sud­hakar Son­awane of not al­low­ing them to speak about min­utes not be­ing tabled and other pro­pos­als in the gen­eral body meet­ing on Satur­day.

As soon as t he meet­ing be­gan, op­po­si­tion leader Vi­jay Chougule de­manded that the min­utes of the last meet­ing be tabled. He also asked if a pend­ing res­o­lu­tion of Jan­uary would be brought for ap­proval or be deemed as ap­proved.

Chougule asked NMMC sec­re­tary Chi­tra Baviskar to re­ply to his de­mand. Other op­po­si­tion cor­po­ra­tors too raised the is­sue.

As the op­po­si­tion upped the ante, Son­awane in­ter­vened and said, “This house func­tions un­der my au­thor­ity. What­ever an­swers are re­quired, will be an­swered by me not the sec­re­tary.”

Up­set by the re­mark, the op­po­si­tion mem­bers cor­nered Son­awane. The mayor called for the res­o­lu­tions on the agenda and got them passed by the house.

The op­po­si­tion de­manded to speak on the is­sue of prop­erty tax and ob­jected to the res­o­lu­tion con­cern­ing it be­ing passed with­out al­low­ing them speak.

Son­awane said the res­o­lu­tion had been ap­proved and so he will not al­low any dis­cus­sion on it. This led to op­po­si­tion lead­ers squat­ting on the floor in protest against the mayor.

See­ing the ag­gres­sion, the mayor an­nounced lunch break and ad­journed the meet­ing.
