SMRITI IRANI AND MAYAWATI FACE OFF IN RAJYA SABHA
NEW DELHI: Sparks flew in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as two feisty politicians — BSP chief Mayawati and HRD minister Smriti Irani — had a go at each other, resulting in repeated adjournments stalling the debate on recent incidents at JNU and University of Hyderabad. Mayawati sought a separate debate on Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide, which she dubbed as an “insult to 25 crore Dalits”. The debate was slotted to start in the afternoon but the BSP chief wouldn’t wait for it as she demanded that a Dalit be included in the judicial commission probing the suicide.
BSP MPs were virtually stationed in the Well of the House, forcing adjournments and demanding the resignation of Union ministers Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya.
