Parents protest fee hike in Kopar Khairane school
NAVI MUMBAI: Upset parents took a morcha to Christ Academy school i n Kopar Khairane to protest against what they termed was arbitrary fee hike by the school.
The parents allege that they are regularly fleeced by the school that cites various reasons.
The school management has however dismissed the allegations stating that the fee hike was done with the consent of the parents teachers association ( PTA).
The school has announced that there will be an increase of 23% in the fees of students of state board and 26% of ICSE board students from the next academic year.
As soon as the fee hike notice was sent to the parents, several of them decided to oppose it. Following discussions amongst themselves, around 150 parents gheroed the school Tuesday morning.
A parent speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “The school keeps coming up with ways to earn easy money. Earlier, in the name of school building repairs and maintenance, the parents had been asked to pay 1 year to 3 years fee in advance.”
He added, “Most of the parents here are from the middle and lower middle class sections including autorickshaw drivers. “
Another parent said, “Some parents who can afford to have paid Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh fee to the school at one go. Those who have not been able to pay are being burdened with the fee hike.”
He added, “We are asked to pay Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 for entry to even events held at the school.
Also, despite students studying in the same school, every 3 years they are asked to take new admission and charged Rs 10,000 for it.”
A parent said, “We even have to suffer due to late deposit of fee cheques by the school personnel. We have to pay the penalties for it.”
Following the morcha, a delegation of two parents met the school management.
A school official said, “They were told that the fee hike has been done after discussion with PTA. They were also shown a letter signed by PTA committee members.”
