Par­ents protest fee hike in Kopar Khairane school

NAVI MUM­BAI: Up­set par­ents took a mor­cha to Christ Academy school i n Kopar Khairane to protest against what they termed was ar­bi­trary fee hike by the school.

The par­ents al­lege that they are reg­u­larly fleeced by the school that cites var­i­ous rea­sons.

The school man­age­ment has how­ever dis­missed the al­le­ga­tions stat­ing that the fee hike was done with the con­sent of the par­ents teach­ers as­so­ci­a­tion ( PTA).

The school has an­nounced that there will be an in­crease of 23% in the fees of stu­dents of state board and 26% of ICSE board stu­dents from the next aca­demic year.

As soon as the fee hike no­tice was sent to the par­ents, sev­eral of them de­cided to op­pose it. Fol­low­ing dis­cus­sions amongst them­selves, around 150 par­ents gheroed the school Tues­day morn­ing.

A par­ent speak­ing on con­di­tion of anonymity, said: “The school keeps com­ing up with ways to earn easy money. Ear­lier, in the name of school build­ing re­pairs and main­te­nance, the par­ents had been asked to pay 1 year to 3 years fee in ad­vance.”

He added, “Most of the par­ents here are from the middle and lower middle class sec­tions in­clud­ing au­torick­shaw driv­ers. “

An­other par­ent said, “Some par­ents who can af­ford to have paid Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh fee to the school at one go. Those who have not been able to pay are be­ing bur­dened with the fee hike.”

He added, “We are asked to pay Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 for en­try to even events held at the school.

Also, de­spite stu­dents study­ing in the same school, ev­ery 3 years they are asked to take new ad­mis­sion and charged Rs 10,000 for it.”

A par­ent said, “We even have to suf­fer due to late de­posit of fee cheques by the school per­son­nel. We have to pay the penal­ties for it.”

Fol­low­ing the mor­cha, a del­e­ga­tion of two par­ents met the school man­age­ment.

A school of­fi­cial said, “They were told that the fee hike has been done af­ter dis­cus­sion with PTA. They were also shown a let­ter signed by PTA com­mit­tee mem­bers.”
