Panvel engineer held for misusing dad’s red beacon
The Vashi police arrested a youth from a financially well-to -do family for using a red beacon atop his Honda City car.
The youth, an engineer and a resident of Panvel, had reportedly done it to save a few rupees at the toll plazas.
Official cars are exempted from paying toll charges.
When he was stopped by the police for verification, he would flash an identity card of a central government ministry. Police have confirmed that the identity card is fake.
The police said that he also claimed that his mother is a cabinet secretary in the central government and grandfather, cabinet minister in Rajasthan government cabinet.
The accused has been identified as Vivek Pipal, 26, son of an ONGC employee. For the past two months, Pipal been using his father’s car.
A police inquiry over a lost mobile phone led them to him.
It was during his interrogation that the police learnt about the bogus identity card and beacon scam.
According to Ajay Landge, senior police officer of Vashi police station, “He had been called in for questioning over the theft of an iPhone. When we checked his antecedents we found out the truth. He then revealed that he had done it to save on toll charges.”
Landge said, “He had kept the red beacon near the windshield for easy visibility. If someone asked, he would say that his mother is a cabinet secretary in the central government. At other times, his grand father would become cabinet minister in Rajasthan government cabinet.”
Stated Landge, “He had also got a bogus identity card of VIP authority in his name, supposedly issued by the central government. It has the government’s emblem and picture of the parliament.”
Pipal was reportedly moving around Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and other areas using the ID card and beacon for the past two months.
The police have also found a bogus letterhead of the central foreign ministry.
Added Landge, “We are inquiring if he had used the bogus identity card or other documents to mislead anyone as that is a high possibility.”
