Manpada Road, which is a vital link between several cities, witnessed a thick jam during the Dombivli fire incident.

Fire engulfed Ultra Pure Chemical Company in Dombivli MIDC around 9am on Saturday, leading to snarls on most connectors.

The road that connects Kalyan to Dombivli, Shilphata, Thane, Bhiwandi, Panvel and Mahape saw several vehicles queuing up for more than an hour.

The road was closed for vehicles as the fire couldn’t be brought under control and it was spreading across the premises.

The Manpada stretch sees traffic of private vehicles, cargos and tankers every day.

The traffic police, who rushed to the fire spot, could not control the jam as many motorists had parked their vehicles to have a look at the inferno.

“It was a huge task managing the traffic, as people were not cooperating. We managed to remove all the vehicles and then halt the traffic movement for an hour. It took some time to control the situation,” said Jaywant Nagrale, API, traffic Dombivli.

A team of 25 from the Eagle Brigade team Dombivli, a group of social activists, also reached the spot to help the traffic police to control the situation.

“There was no space on the road when we reached. Not a

single vehicle could move. First, we managed to move the vehicles to make way for the ambulances and the fire tenders,” said Vishwanath Biwalkar, the founder of Eagle Brigade.

Several commuters, who reached the spot and found the jam, decided to take another

route.

“When I reached the area, I saw smoke billowing t he entire Manpada Road congested. I immediately decided to take Shivaji Chowk in Kalyan ( west), which is an alternative route connecting Bhiwandi and Thane,” said

Jayesh Mane, 32.

Umesh Chaudhary, 37, takes the Manpada Road everyday.

He learnt about the incident on Manpada Road when he was on his way to office in Panvel.

“I decided to avoid t he usual route. I also informed my friends who take the road daily. I took the Chakki Naka road, another route from Kalyan east, which connects the Haji Malang Road and then took the road to Taloja and Panvel. The Manpada Road is the most convenient one to my office,” said Chaudhary, a resident of Vijaynagar, Kalyan east.
