After a public toilet constructed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation ( Cidco) at Wahal was demolished on Monday, the residents have been opposing the move.

The open plot readied after clearing the toilet which was built at a cost of Rs25lakh three years ago, will be given to a developer for a housing project. Cidco officials said the toilet was in the way of the entrance gate of the housing project.

The maintenance of the toilet was being done by Wahal panchayat. When the Wahal villagers opposed the demolition of the toilet, Cidco officials took the matter to the NRI coastal police station against the villagers. The developer showed documents proving that the plot on which the public toilet stood had been given to him by Cidco.

Ganesh Patil, a villager, said, “Either Cidco or the developer should have provided us an alternative toilet before demolishing it.”
