Chembur man booked for blackmailing Sanpada woman
A 27- year- old Chembur resident, who had allegedly been blackmailing a woman from Sanpada and tried to extort Rs3 lakh from her, has been booked by the Sanapada police on Tuesday.
According to the police, the accused and the 43 year- old complainant, were f riends on a social networking site since May, last year. Later they exchanged their phone numbers and started talking on phone too.
The accused allegedly asked for some photographs of the complainant and she too sent a few of them a few months ago. They met each other on several occasions and went for shopping too.
“A few weeks ago, the accused told the complainant that he had the audios of their telephonic conversations with him. And that he was going to send those audios along with her pictures to her husband. He then demanded Rs 3 lakh from her if she wanted save her marriage. He continued harassing her for several days,” said Raju Pocharkar, assistant police inspector from Sanpada police station.
The complainant got scared initially. However, she later narrated the entire incident to her husband and then registered an FIR against the accused on Tuesday.
“We are collecting evidences in the case and will arrest the accused within a next two to three days. A case under section 384 (punishment for extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused. Our investigations are on,” another police officer from Sanpada police station.
Pratibha Shendge, police inspector from Navi Mumbai cyber cell said, “It has been observed that cases related to social media are on the rise in the city. Recently, we registered a similar case from Kopar Khairane and are now investigating it.”
