Chem­bur man booked for black­mail­ing San­pada woman

A 27- year- old Chem­bur res­i­dent, who had al­legedly been black­mail­ing a woman from San­pada and tried to ex­tort Rs3 lakh from her, has been booked by the Sana­pada po­lice on Tues­day.

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, the ac­cused and the 43 year- old com­plainant, were f riends on a so­cial net­work­ing site since May, last year. Later they ex­changed their phone num­bers and started talk­ing on phone too.

The ac­cused al­legedly asked for some pho­to­graphs of the com­plainant and she too sent a few of them a few months ago. They met each other on sev­eral oc­ca­sions and went for shop­ping too.

“A few weeks ago, the ac­cused told the com­plainant that he had the au­dios of their tele­phonic con­ver­sa­tions with him. And that he was go­ing to send those au­dios along with her pic­tures to her hus­band. He then de­manded Rs 3 lakh from her if she wanted save her mar­riage. He con­tin­ued ha­rass­ing her for sev­eral days,” said Raju Pocharkar, as­sis­tant po­lice in­spec­tor from San­pada po­lice sta­tion.

The com­plainant got scared ini­tially. How­ever, she later nar­rated the en­tire in­ci­dent to her hus­band and then reg­is­tered an FIR against the ac­cused on Tues­day.

“We are col­lect­ing ev­i­dences in the case and will ar­rest the ac­cused within a next two to three days. A case un­der sec­tion 384 (pun­ish­ment for ex­tor­tion) of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC) has been reg­is­tered against the ac­cused. Our in­ves­ti­ga­tions are on,” an­other po­lice of­fi­cer from San­pada po­lice sta­tion.

Prat­i­bha Shendge, po­lice in­spec­tor from Navi Mum­bai cy­ber cell said, “It has been ob­served that cases re­lated to so­cial me­dia are on the rise in the city. Re­cently, we reg­is­tered a sim­i­lar case from Kopar Khairane and are now in­ves­ti­gat­ing it.”
