24-YEAR- OLD TRIES TO EXTORT R5 LAKH FROM BIZMAN, HELD
A 24-year-old man from Kopar Khairane, who allegedly tried to extort Rs5 lakh from one businessman and also vandalised his office for not getting the extortion money, was arrested by the police on Tuesday.
According to t he police, Mayur Lakde, a resident of Sector 5, called Sandeep Mhatre, 42, and asked for Rs5 lakh. He threatened him with dire consequences if he did not act accordingly.
“Even after several days when the accused did not get the ransom, he along with some of his accomplices came to the complainant’s office on Sunday and broke the windowpanes with iron rods. All of them fled on their bikes,” said S Yelkar, assistant police inspector from Kopar Khairane police station.
Mhatre, who supplies construction materials to the buildings, then approached the police and registered an FIR against the culprits.
“Acting on a tip-off, we arrested Lakde on Tuesday. He has been booked under sections 384, 452, 427 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We are on the lookout for rest of the culprits,” he said.
When asked if there was any other motive behind the crime the officer said, “It is too early to say something about it. We will get a clear picture only after we arrest all the people involved in the crime. Our investigations are on.”
