24-YEAR- OLD TRIES TO EX­TORT R5 LAKH FROM BIZ­MAN, HELD

A 24-year-old man from Kopar Khairane, who al­legedly tried to ex­tort Rs5 lakh from one busi­ness­man and also van­dalised his of­fice for not get­ting the ex­tor­tion money, was ar­rested by the po­lice on Tues­day.

Ac­cord­ing to t he po­lice, Mayur Lakde, a res­i­dent of Sec­tor 5, called San­deep Mha­tre, 42, and asked for Rs5 lakh. He threat­ened him with dire con­se­quences if he did not act ac­cord­ingly.

“Even af­ter sev­eral days when the ac­cused did not get the ran­som, he along with some of his ac­com­plices came to the com­plainant’s of­fice on Sun­day and broke the win­dow­panes with iron rods. All of them fled on their bikes,” said S Yelkar, as­sis­tant po­lice in­spec­tor from Kopar Khairane po­lice sta­tion.

Mha­tre, who sup­plies con­struc­tion ma­te­ri­als to the build­ings, then ap­proached the po­lice and reg­is­tered an FIR against the cul­prits.

“Act­ing on a tip-off, we ar­rested Lakde on Tues­day. He has been booked un­der sec­tions 384, 452, 427 and 34 of the In­dian Pe­nal Code (IPC). We are on the look­out for rest of the cul­prits,” he said.

When asked if there was any other mo­tive be­hind the crime the of­fi­cer said, “It is too early to say some­thing about it. We will get a clear pic­ture only af­ter we ar­rest all the peo­ple in­volved in the crime. Our in­ves­ti­ga­tions are on.”
