Footpaths, roads used for parking at Vashi’s Sector 17
Residents of Vashi are bearing the brunt of the increase in vehicles at Sector 17 of the node.
While parking is a major issue across the city, this is a persistent problem at Sector 17. One of the busiest areas at all time of the day, Sector 17 houses shopping outlets, eateries, banks, offices and residential societies. With hundreds of people visiting the place every day, parking has become a major problem.
“Parking in sector 17 Vashi is a major issue for last many years and there seems to be no solution to it. Most of the time single lane becomes double lane parking and it even gets triple at times due to the heavy rush and since there are no place to park the vehicles,” said Avinash Manohar, 21 resident of Vashi. Residents said that often when the lanes are crowded with four-wheelers, people park bikes on footpath, creating chaos.
“The entire f ootpath is encroached upon and the safety of pedestrians is an issue. There are many parks in the area but often senior citizens and children find it difficult to walk through unless guided by someone,” said Niyati Jaswal, 31, another resident of Vashi.
Residents suggested that the
authorities make no- parking zones on bylanes around MTNL office, Vashi post office zone and the sector 17 lane so that motorists would be disciplined.
“People have become used to parking their vehicles on the bylanes and don’t want to park at the parking lot. The authorities should prohibit parking on the lanes which will coerce motorists to park their vehicles in parking areas only,” said Rajesh Sonavane, 27, resident of Vashi.
Traffic officials said that their numerous drives have not solved the problem.
“Only single- lane parking is allowed here, but the area is scattered with vehicles on not just weekends but weekdays too. When there is no parking space available, people park their vehicles on no-parking zones or footpaths and pavements and the situation is worse in the evenings,” said Arvind Salve, DCP traffic, Navi Mumbai.
