The standing committee of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) on Wednesday approved various civic works in the city.

Prominent among the proposals was a Rs1.94 cr for a pedestrian subway in Karave village.

Over 40% of Karave villagers are fisherfolk who regularly cross Palm Beach Road.

A number of accidents have been reported in the area leading to not just serious injuries but also fatalities.

The local corporators and residents had appealed for the subway. A rasta roko agitation was also staged last year on July 14 for the demand.

Local cor porator Vinod Mhatre said, “Over 40% of Karave villagers are fisherfolk who regularly cross Palm Beach road.

A number of accidents have been reported in the area leading to not just serious injuries but also fatalities.”

He added, “We had l ong appealed for the subway. A rasta roko agitation was also staged last year on July 14 for the demand. NMMC authorities had then assured us of a positive response and I am thankful to them for the project that is to be taken up.”

Municipal commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said, “When CIDCO constructed Palm Beach road, it did not make provision for the Karave residents to cross over to the creek side where they go for catching fish for their livelihood.”

He added, “The rise in the number of vehicles on the road and speeding by motorists have led to a number of accidents. The NMMC then ordered a security audit by IIT which suggested the construction of the subway and this is what NMMC is implementing.”
