Jewellers to hold rally over excise duty today
VASHI: The strike called by All India Gems and Jewellery Federation to protest the 1% excise duty on gold jewellery has received strong support in Navi Mumbai. Initially called for just 3 days, the strike has been now on for 11 days.
Jewellers of Navi Mumbai, Panvel and Uran have decided to hold a combined rally in Vashi on Saturday to protest the decision of the government.
Around 2,000 jewellers from 15 nodes are expected to participate in the rally that will start from Joylukas jewellery shop at Sector 30A, through Vashi to Shivaji Chowk and back.
Navi Mumbai f ederation president Lalit Bagercha said: “Jewellers have to pay VAT, income tax, gumasta tax, property tax and so on which are already eating into our business. With Excise duty and its related rules and regulations, the jewelers will face even problems.”
