Jewellers to hold rally over ex­cise duty to­day

VASHI: The strike called by All In­dia Gems and Jew­ellery Fed­er­a­tion to protest the 1% ex­cise duty on gold jew­ellery has re­ceived strong sup­port in Navi Mum­bai. Ini­tially called for just 3 days, the strike has been now on for 11 days.

Jewellers of Navi Mum­bai, Pan­vel and Uran have de­cided to hold a com­bined rally in Vashi on Satur­day to protest the de­ci­sion of the govern­ment.

Around 2,000 jewellers from 15 nodes are ex­pected to par­tic­i­pate in the rally that will start from Joy­lukas jew­ellery shop at Sec­tor 30A, through Vashi to Shivaji Chowk and back.

Navi Mum­bai f ed­er­a­tion pres­i­dent Lalit Bager­cha said: “Jewellers have to pay VAT, in­come tax, gu­masta tax, prop­erty tax and so on which are al­ready eat­ing into our busi­ness. With Ex­cise duty and its re­lated rules and reg­u­la­tions, the jewel­ers will face even prob­lems.”
