3 held for stealing vehicles, selling them
NAVI MUMBAI: Navi Mumbai crime branch has busted a gang that specialized in heavy vehicle thefts and then breaking them down within a couple of hours for sale as scrap. Police have recovered Rs 7.2 lakh worth of property from the gang.
The arrested members of the gang have been identified as Mohammed Murtuza Mohammed Khan (26), Paru Avadhram Chauhan (45) and Shadab Alauddin Khan (19), all hailing from Uttar Pradesh. The trio were arrested recently from Asudgaon area. According to police commissioner Prabhat Ranjan, “On March 6, a truck of one Sangram Yadav was stolen. During investigation of the crime, this racket came to the fore.”
Giving details of the modus operandi, Ranjan said, “The trio would first steal container trailers from Uran, APMC and Kalamboli areas and take it to a remote area. Within 2 hours of the theft, using gas cutter and other items, they would break up the containers and vehicle completely.”
He added, “They would then sell the metal pieces in scrap. Once a truck or other stolen vehicle is disposed off in this fashion, it becomes very difficult to locate it and solve the case.”
Revealing that a startling fact had come to light on the arrest of the accused, Ranjan said, “They have confessed that some owners of vehicles, whose vehicles were in a dilapidated state would themselves give the vehicles to them in return for some money.” He added, “While the gang members would breakup and dispose the vehiles, the owners would lodge a complaint of the vehicle being stolen and claim compensation from the insurance company.”
