Won’t say Bharat Mata ki jai, city MLA sus­pended

MUM­BAI: The Maharashtra As­sem­bly on Wed­nes­day sus­pended Waris Yusuf Pathan, an MLA from the All In­dia Ma­jlis-e-It­te­hadul Mus­limeen (AIMIM), for re­fus­ing to say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

The sus­pen­sion mo­tion was moved by the rul­ing BJP-Shiv Sena al­liance, for ‘deroga­tory and ob­jec­tion­able’ com­ments against the coun­try, and ‘deroga­tory’ re­marks against the sov­er­eign house. The As­sem­bly passed it unan­i­mously, af­ter op­po­si­tion par­ties, the Congress and Na­tion­al­ist Congress Party, sup­ported the mo­tion.

Pathan ,48, a leg­is­la­tor from By­culla, is barred from en­ter­ing the state leg­is­la­ture premises un­til the on­go­ing bud­get ses­sion ends.

The in­ci­dent un­folded dur­ing a speech in the As­sem­bly by AIMIM leg­is­la­tor Imtiyaz Jalil.

The Au­rangabad MLA was op­pos­ing con­struc­tion of memo­ri­als of his­tor­i­cal fig­ures and politi­cians by the Maharashtra govern­ment in his speech.
