Tayade refused to pay more. The cleaner, who is in his twenties, punched Tayade. Even as the passenger tried to push him off, the cleaner was joined by the bus driver and both rained blows on Tayade.

The man sustained head injuries. Seeing him bleeding and injured, the other passengers pulled out the driver and the cleaner and started beating them. The two were thrashed badly, their clothes torn and people also pelted stones at the bus.

Tayade was first taken to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to Thane civil hospital.

The driver, Mahesh Hari Bhau Patil, 40, was handed over to the police. The cleaner, Vicky, pushed the policemen and managed to run away. “It was Vicky’s first day at work. He is a resident of Ovala Majiwada in Thane,” said the police officer from Rabodi police.

“The driver has been arrested while the cleaner fled from the spot. We have sent police personnel to his home to know his whereabouts,” he added.

The police officer said, “The angry passengers not only beat up the driver and cleaner but also pelted stones at bus. The incident halted traffic for almost an hour and vehicles could be seen lined up till 1km.”
