After launching their own website and Twitter accounts in the past few months, the Navi Mumbai police have introduced two phone numbers so that residents can WhatsApp them the complaints.

The residents can now inform the police about any incident, illicit activities going on in their neighborhood through this number.

They can also share other secret details which could be helpful for the police in maintaining law and order situation in the city.

If any major case is detected with his or her information, the informer will be rewarded by the police department, a senior officer said.

The WhatsApp numbers are 8424820686 and 8424820665. The numbers are being monitored by special team from the social media lab in CBD Belapur.

“Several people, especially the women hesitate to speak to the police on phone. Many of them don’t even know the phone numbers of the nearest police station and the help lines.

Therefore, even if they have some good information they can’t share with us. For reducing this communication gap we have introduced this WhatsApp numbers,” said TB More, police inspector from the commissioner’s office.

“If anyone needs our help at part of the city, they can also inform through this and we will then alert the nearest police station.

One big advantage of this system is that residents can send us picture and video right from a spot and it will help us understand the situation better. For example if we receive a picture or a video of a road accident or fire accident instantly, we will be able to take right decision at the right time,” he added.

A senior officer from the crime branch said that people can also give details of gambling dens, lottery frauds, and immoral activities in the ladies bars though this.

“If any major case is detected with the details found on WhatsApp, the informer will be rewarded soon after,” he said.

“The reward will be decided by the senior officers. However, if need be, we will also keep the informers identity secret for their safety and security. We have done so in several cases. Therefore, anyone can share details with us without any hesitation,” another senior officer said.
