A doctor who runs a hospital in Ulhasnagar was arrested on Thursday for allegedly trying to sell a newborn baby girl.

Rajkumar Sadashiv Jadhav, 31, a resident of Ambernath, was arrested after the police laid a trap after a tip-off.

The baby, born a couple of weeks ago, was not wanted by her 23-year-old unwed mother.

“The woman approached the doctor as she did not want to keep the baby,” said a police officer from anti-human trafficking cell, Thane.

The police sent dummy parents who wanted to adopt the child.

“The doctor asked for Rs15,000 as the charge to prepare documents. On Thursday, two officials went to ‘buy’ the baby and the doctor was arrested,” said a police inspector.

He added that the doctor owns Kirti hospital, at camp number 4 in Ulhasnagar, and the woman delivered the baby there.

“The doctor was produced in court and was released on bail. We are investigating further,” said the officer.
