KHARGHAR: Differences between Shiv Sena and BJP over claiming credit for the allotment of spaces to hawkers by Cidco on its land in Kharghar led to the cancellation of the programme on Thursday.

Following a banner put up by Cidco declaring the area as its proposed market, the BJP and Shiv Sena organized a space distribution programme for the hawkers on Thursday.

The Shiv Sena had organised hawker space distribution programme at Sector 11 of Kharghar, near Kendriya Vihar and the BJP at Sector 21 on Thursday.

Many hawkers were present for the programme. Soon, there were arguments over who gets the credit for the allotment which ended in a fiasco for the programme leaving the hawkers in a lurch. A political source said, “MLA Prashant Thakur was to inaugurate the markets but it is not clear what transpired, leading to the cancellation of the programme.”

A hawker said, “The land belongs to Cidco, but the fight between the two parties will adversely affect us.”

BJP MLA Prashant Thakur had identified a Kharghar hawker-free zone which the residents had supported. Thakur had demanded that Cidco reserve a plot for hawkers and hand it over to the hawkers without the intervention of the political parties. He then stated there will be no injustice meted to anyone and the hawkers will get their space.

Cidco has reportedly earmarked 24 plots for hawkers’ zone and also put up banners of the proposed market area in some areas. However, without taking Cidco into confidence, the two parties announced the distribution programme.

As per Cidco survey, there are around 1,000 eligible hawkers in Kharghar. According to sources, some political workers have filled forms of their friends and relatives taking the figure to 10,000.
