Man held for abet­ting wife’s sui­cide

NAVI MUM­BAI: The New Pan­vel police have ar­rested a 33-year-old man af­ter his wife com­mit­ted sui­cide by set­ting her­self on fire on Thurs­day. His in-laws al­lege that he used to abuse and as­sault his wife, be­cause of which she took the step.

Ac­cord­ing to t he police, Harshu­ram Mha­tre and Jy­ot­shna, 30, tied the knot in 2007 and lived at Sai vil­lage in Pan­vel. They have a six-year-old son and a four-year-old daugh­ter.

“Mha­tre used to come home drunk and as­sault his wife over mi­nor is­sues,” said a police of­fi­cer from New Pan­vel police sta­tion.

Jy­ot­shna used to call her brothers and tell them her plight.

“On Wed­nes­day morn­ing too, the cou­ple fought over some fam­ily is­sues. Fol­low­ing a heated ar­gu­ment, Mha­tre as­saulted his wife and then went out of the house. She poured kerosene on her and then set her­self on fire,” he said.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital by some neigh­bours, but she died af­ter some­time. Ac­cord­ing to the doc­tors, she suf­fered 95% burns.

Fol­low­ing a first in­for­ma­tion re­port (FIR) reg­is­tered by Jy­ot­shna’s fam­ily, the police ar­rested Mha­tre on Thurs­day. He does var­i­ous odd jobs to earn his liveli­hood.

He has been re­manded in police cus­tody.
