RTOs check if vehicles have speed governor
NAVI MUMBAI: All vehicles coming to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Vashi and Panvel for registrations or renewal of fitness certificate are being checked.
The check is intended to find out if the transport vehicles including school buses, trucks, trailers, dumpers and goods transport vehicles have a speed governor fitted which has recently been made compulsory from April by the state transport department.
After installation of speed governors, the school bus speed will be at 40km per hour, goods transport vehicles at 60 km per hour, dumpers and trucker at 60km per hour and all other vehicles at 80 km per hour.
“The new transport vehicles such as trucks, buses, dumpers and mini buses were already notified to install speed governors to limit their speed to 80 km per hour from October 1 last year,” said Sanjay Dhaygude, deputy RTO, of Vashi RTO.
The school buses had to install speed governor in 2012. The other vehicles had time till April 1.
“We are checking if the new and old vehicles have implemented it. Their permit will be kept on hold until they get the speed governors installed,” Dhaygude said.
Installing the speed governor is mandatory as per section 118 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.
“If the new transport vehicles do not have speed governors, they will not be registered at the RTO. Fitness renewal certificate will not be approved for existing vehicles by the RTO,” said Anand Patil, deputy RTO of Panvel.
