City has sufficient water but not distributed well: Activists

Situation could improve if NMMC curbs water theft, pilferage and illegal connections

NAVI MUMBAI: Last year’s deficient rainfall has cast a dry spell on the state, forcing authorities to impose stringent water cuts to ensure the stock lasts until the monsoon arrives.

Compared with neighbouring Thane, which is facing acute water cuts, Navi Mumbai has been getting sufficient water supply. However, areas such as Digha and Ghansoli have been facing 40% and 42.20% water cuts over the past few months.

Mismanagement of water supply, illegal connections and theft are the culprits, said activists.

After imposing 33% water cut, around 286 million litres per day (mld) water is being supplied to 14 lakh residents of Navi Mumbai, while in Thane, 240 mld water is being distributed among 20 lakh people.

“The Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation mandates that every urban city must supply at least 135 litres of water daily for every person. Compared with what’s mandated, residents of Navi Mumbai receive sufficient amount of water every,” said Sridhar Mane, 45, an activist from Nerul.

“If despite getting adequate supply, there is a water crisis, we need to find out if the available water is being properly distributed among residents,” added Mane.

According to Mane, “Several cases of water theft, pilferage and unauthorised connections have come to light in the past three to four months. If the NMMC takes care of these issues, the situation will be much better in the city.”

Kopar Khairane resident Sonali Saha said the civic body does not seem to have a clear policy for distributing water, which is why some areas are facing severe water crisis in the city. “While a 33.87% water cut has been imposed in Kopar Khairane, only 28.57 % water cut has been imposed in Nerul,” said Saha.

“We have imposed water cuts after conducting a survey in different nodes,” said Arvind Shinde, executive engineer (water supply), NMMC, adding, “It’s not fair to say claim mismanagement of water in the city. The situation in Navi Mumbai is still much better compared with any other city.”
