35-yr-old man held with five illegal weapons at Kalamboli
The police arrested a 35-year-old man from APMC with five illegal firearms in Kalamboli on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the police accosted him before he reached his destination and seized the firearms from him. The police are, however, unclear about whom he was to handover the seized firearms.
“After receiving a tip-off, we deployed officials at different locations. One of our teams spotted the accused with a plastic bag and began interrogating him. When he was unable to give coherent replies, our officials checked his bag and found five kattas in it. He was then arrested,” said an officer from Kalamboli police station.
The police have identified the accused as an Uttar Pradesh native, Raju Srivastav, who is a vegetable vendor.
Srivastav has been booked under sections 3 and 25 of Indian Arms Act, said the police.
Deputy commissioner of police (special branch) Suresh Mengade said, “Most of the illegal firearms we seized in 2014 and 2015 were manufactured in north Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A majority of them were factorymade pistols.”
But it is not easy to find clues about the manufacturers, Police chief Prabhat Ranjan and his officers show the seized firearms on Thursday. as these weapons have ‘Made in US’, ‘Made in UK’ and even ‘Made in China’ tags on them.
“These weapons look sophisticated,” said another police officer, adding, “It is only after a close examination that one understands these are not imported weapons, but are manufactured in UP and Bihar.”
