Civic body sets up 10 centres to guide students in RTE admission

Applications will be accepted till the end of this month; lottery dates yet to be announced

Hindustan Times ST (Mumbai) - HT Navi Mumbai Live - - NAVI MUMBAI -

Students seeking admission under Right to Education (RTE) have help at hand.

Like last year, the Navi Mumbai municipal corporation (NMMC) has set up 10 centres in the city. Applicants can contact the nearest ward office to know about the centres.

Sources from education department of the civic body said there are around 3,200 seats available under RTE in the satellite city.

Every year, the RTE seats in most schools are not filled as people do not know how to apply. The centres will help them fill forms for admission, a senior officer said.

“To get a seat under RTE, a student has to apply online and documents have to be attached along with the application,” said AR Patnigere, deputy municipal commissioner (education). “Since all students and the parents are new to the online system, we have set up the centres for them. Last year, too, we had set up 10 centres,” said Patnigere.

“The schools will directly handle all the admission process in the online admission system. We only have to monitor the process. We have made all necessary arrangements to make it a smooth process for parents,” he added.

The Right to Education allows admissions to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) children to seek free education in nonminority, unaided school. The applications will be accepted till this month.

After which, the dates of the lottery will be announced.

The education department has announced that there would be no extension given to schools or parents for submitting application forms.

Parents should approach the helpline centre to check for the details related to their application and complete the process within the stipulated period.

“Efforts have been taken to simplify the system as far as possible. After the applicant enters his residential pin code on the online form, the software will show the names of schools where he can take admission,” said an official from the education department, NMMC.

“The schools will be within a 3km radius from the residence. Documents will have to be scanned and attached with the online form. The help centres have been set up to provide residents assistance in filling the forms and to verify the documents submitted along with the application,” he added.
