The APMC police have booked two real estate developers after the duo allegedly cheated a resident of Ghansoli of Rs 11.65 lakh promising him a flat in Taloja.

The suspects met the complainant, Machindra Narle, 55, in early 2013, the police said. They showed him one under-construction building at Taloja (phase II) and asked him to book one flat, they added.

“Narle believed them to be genuine people and readily agreed to book one flat. Between July 2013 and March this year, he paid them the amount in several installments. However, the suspected failed to hand over the booked flat to him,” said one police officer.

Even after pursuing the matter for several months when Narle did not see any hope of getting the flat, he approached the police and registered a case. The police are now investigating the matter.

“Violent crimes may have gone down, but the main problem in the city now seems to be cheating. In most cases the victims are not careful and they end up paying money to the culprits, expecting they will fulfil their dreams. They approach us only after they realise that they have been cheated. These crimes are, therefore, mainly a breach of contract and very rarely, a breach of trust,” a crime branch official said.
