Come May 1 and Kalyan- Dombivli Municipal Corporation ( KDMC) plans to impose a ban on the use of plastic in its jurisdiction. Mayor Rajendra Devlekar has asked civic officials to ensure the ban is imposed effectively. Those failing to comply with the order will be fined, said civic officials.

The civic body is planning to observe a year-long cleanliness drive starting May 2016 to April next year for waste management and segregation. Banning the use of plastic bags is one of the major steps towards this.

“The ban on plastic bags is not a new initiative. It is being implemented in many places, including the civic body. ,” said Devlekar.

The civic body has sent notices to shopkeepers and small businessmen, asking them to stop using plastic bags.

A representative has been appointed from each ward to ensure that the notices reach all those concerned before May 1.

Also, the chief health officer and health officer of the civic body will be given the rights to take action against those not following this order.

“It has been difficult to impose a complete ban on the use of plastic bags. This is why we are planning to impose the ban in a phased manner. We have started with the shopkeepers and vendors, who usually hand out plastic carry bags” informed E Ravindran, KDMC commissioner.

“In order to ensure that the plastic ban is implemented among the shopkeepers we have also decided to charge them with a monetary penalty if not following the order,” added Ravindran.

The KDMC aims at spreading awareness on avoiding the use of plastic bags, waste segregation and management through the year.

They have plans t o rope in schools, colleges, environmental groups and also put up hoardings and banners across the city to spread awareness.

We are initiating this ban to reduce their use so that we can soon have a city without plastic bags in future. RAJENDRA DEVLEKAR, Mayor
