City coastline undergoes a safety check
SAGAR KAVACH Navy officers posing as militants enter city with dummy explosives, thwarted by the police
To assess the coastal security mechanism in Navi Mumbai through an exercise, ‘militants’ with dummy explosives entered the city through sea routes to stage attack in the city on Wednesday and Thursday. However, the alert policemen apprehended them before ‘it was too late.’
The exercise- Sagar Kavachwas jointly conducted by the coast guards, Indian Navy, Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) as well as the Navi Mumbai police to check the vigilance in the coastal areas of the city.
On Wednesday morning, officials from the Coast guard and the Navy in civil dresses entered the city with dummy RDX on their boat.
The police officials accosted them on time and thus thwarted their efforts to enter the JNPT.
Likewise on Thursday, the police received a tip-off that some people were planning to stage an attack at Mora, JNPT and on Elephanta Island.
The on-duty officials instantly started their operation, zeroed in on the possible ‘culprits’ within a few hours. They also recovered three boxes of explosives from their possession which was found to be fake at a later stage.
Navi Mumbai police commissioner, Prabhat Ranjan along with the city special branch monitored the entire exercise.
“Even though it was a properly planned exercise to check the vigilance in the coastal areas, senior police officers were also not aware of it. However, our alert officials
took the right steps and at the right moments to thwart the attacks,” said Sursh Mengade, deputy commissioner of police (special branch).
Apart from the officials from different police stations and the special branch, police mitras and members of sagar rakshak dals also participated it.
“All of them did a really good job. More such exercises will be conducted in future,” Mengade added.
“Citizens are requested to be vigilant and to check for suspicious movement of people not only in the coastal areas, but in others places too. In case, any suspicious movement or activities are detected, then it should be reported to the control room,” another police officer said.
