The civic body’s standing committee — dominated by the Shiv Sena-BJP combine — on Wednesday approved giving contracts worth Rs226 crore to build four bridges to the two firms that its own probe had found guilty of irregularities while carrying out road repairs — and at 36% to 54% above the estimated cost.

The opposition was quick to hit out at the ruling allies, saying the awarding of contracts could have been deferred, and eventually cancelled.

The row began after the committee approved proposals to give contracts to build four bridges to two tainted firms named in a first information report for fraudulent practices in road repairs. The standing committee has the financial power to clear civic proposals. >> CONTINUED ON P10 >> RELATED REPORTS, P5

No one will be spared. Those found guilty of active or passive involvement [in scam], at higher or junior levels, will face music. AJOY MEHTA, BMC chief
