Panvel man held for transporting gutkha worth ` 3lakh
NAVI MUMBAI: A 36-year-old man, who was allegedly transporting gutkha worth Rs3 lakh from Panvel to Mumbai, was arrested on Thursday. The police have seized the vehicle used for transporting the tobacco product.
Acting on a tip-off, the police along with officials from food and drug administration laid a trap near the Khandeshwar temple at Khanda Colony around 2.30pm. They spotted the vehicle coming towards Mumbai after almost an hour and accosted it.
“When we checked the vehicle, we found 19 bags of gutkhas,” said a police of f i cer f rom Khandeshwar police station.
The arrested man has been identified as Junaid Shaikh, a resident of Panvel. “The price of his vehicle would be around Rs4 lakh. During interrogation he has told us that he was going to deliver the consignment at Jogeswari in Mumbai,” the officer said.
“We are trying to find out from where he got the gutkhas,” he added.
