Pan­vel man held for trans­port­ing gutkha worth ` 3lakh

NAVI MUM­BAI: A 36-year-old man, who was al­legedly trans­port­ing gutkha worth Rs3 lakh from Pan­vel to Mum­bai, was ar­rested on Thurs­day. The po­lice have seized the ve­hi­cle used for trans­port­ing the to­bacco prod­uct.

Act­ing on a tip-off, the po­lice along with of­fi­cials from food and drug ad­min­is­tra­tion laid a trap near the Khan­desh­war tem­ple at Khanda Colony around 2.30pm. They spot­ted the ve­hi­cle com­ing to­wards Mum­bai af­ter al­most an hour and ac­costed it.

“When we checked the ve­hi­cle, we found 19 bags of gutkhas,” said a po­lice of f i cer f rom Khan­desh­war po­lice sta­tion.

The ar­rested man has been iden­ti­fied as Ju­naid Shaikh, a res­i­dent of Pan­vel. “The price of his ve­hi­cle would be around Rs4 lakh. Dur­ing in­ter­ro­ga­tion he has told us that he was go­ing to de­liver the con­sign­ment at Jo­geswari in Mum­bai,” the of­fi­cer said.

“We are try­ing to find out from where he got the gutkhas,” he added.
