VASHI: Mini Seashore, a favourite place with city residents now has an added attraction. Boating services at the pond, which had been discontinued almost five years ago, have started again.

Huge family crowds can be seen at the pond in Sector 10A since earlier this week, with a high demand for boating.

The service, from 8am to 8pm, is being provided by Square Marine Pvt. Ltd. and there are 10 paddle boats. More boats are expected to be added soon. The charges are Rs50 a person for half an hour.

Deputy mayor Avinash Lad, who is also a local corporator, said: “There had been a demand from residents to restore the boating service at the pond. There is little outdoor activity for kids and families in the city and hence there is a big demand for boating.”

He said, “The earlier boating service was discontinued as the agency had to pay to MTDC even for the four months of monsoon when the services had to be suspended. This did not make it feasible for them.”

Lad said, “After much efforts, we have managed to get the area under NMMC jurisdiction and managed to get the agency to operate the service. The charges too have been kept to the minimum so that everyone can have a great time.”

According to Lad the response has been huge and crowds flocking to mini-seashore have grown after the boating facility was started.

The area’s security is also being upgraded.

Lad said, “Work on installing around 13 CCTV cameras in the area has begun. It should be completed within two weeks.”

He said, “A large number of residents from kids to the elderly and women come to miniseashore especially early in the morning and in the evening for their walks.

Their security is of great concern and hence we decided to have the cameras to monitor the area.”

Lad said, “We want to make the area an ideal spot for residents and visitors to have quality family time and also to maintain good health. All steps are being taken with this objective.”

The residents are of course very pleased.

Rakesh Mittal, a resident, said: “We often come here with our children who love the surroundings, the pond, garden and of course the toy train. Now, with boating added, our trips are certainly going to increase. The kids are having a great time.”
