NMMC DEMOLISHES TEMPLES, SLUMS IN DIGHA
DIGHA: In a major demolition action undertaken by the NMMC, two temples and a slum colony that had come up on the corporation’s land, were demolished at Sathenagar in Digha on Wednesday.
The action met with strong protest by the locals several of whom were detained by Rabale police. The anti-encroachment department of NMMC demolished two temples – Sai Mandir and Buddh Vihar Takshashila. Around 50 hutments that had illegally come up near a flyover too were demolished.
The locals protested vehemently against the action, but the police rounded them up, taking them to the police station.
Digha ward officer Ganesh Aghao said, “The demolition was carried out on the orders of the high court which has ordered the demolition of the illegal religious places. These two religious places had come up on land reserved by NMMC for public utility purposes.”
He added, “The shanties too had encroached on government land and hence were removed.”
