Vashi police station develops cracks
Police said digging work on the adjacent plot caused the walls to crack; NMMC to conduct structural audit
NAVI MUMBAI: The walls of Vashi police station have developed cracks in the past few weeks. The police said digging work on the adjacent plot has caused the walls to crack.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is digging the plot near the police station to build a community centre.
The civic body demolished the old building of the centre last year and then dug the plot 10 feet deep for constructing the foundation of the new building.
Just after they dug up the plot, the ground floor of the two-storey building of the police station as well as the compound walls developed cracks.
The cabins of the senior police inspector, crime inspector and some rooms used for administrative work are the worst-affected.
“The NMMC engineers did not take any scientific steps while digging the plot and it directly affected our building. We have written to them informing about the cracks. Since, the police station is a government property, we have also written to the public works department (PWD) asking them to do the needful. We have not received any reply from them so far,” said Ajay Kumar Landge, senior police inspector of Vashi police station.
Sanctioned in 1988, Vashi police station is one of the oldest police stations in the city.
The police station premises was renovated and underwent a makeover a few months ago.
An official from NMMC told Hindustan Times that they are planning to conduct a structural audit of the police station and it would be done soon.
“Measures to repair the building will be taken after that,” said the official.
Shubhangi Dode, executive engineer of NMMC under whose supervision the community centre is being constructed, refused to comment on this.
Despite repeated attempts, Mohan Dagaonkar, city engineer of the NMMC, was unavailable for comments.
The Vashi police station topped a recent cleanliness campaign conducted by the NMMC.
An inspector from the police station said: “It is surprising that the civic body which examined the entire premises in terms of cleanliness, failed to pay attention to the structure. After the renovation last year, Vashi police station became one of the well-maintained police stations in the city.”
