‘Open shelters near railway stations’

Hindustan Times ST (Mumbai) - HT Navi Mumbai Live - - NAVI MUMBAI -

Hemant Sharma, socio-legal head of Sahayak NGO, said, “Given the number of people spotted sleeping on roads, there should be one night shelter at every node in the city. The NMMC has only one for the whole of Navi Mumbai and unfortunately they are unable to run it properly. We don’t think that they are lacking in funds to take some concrete steps in this direction. What they are lacking is willingness to help the destitute and a professional attitude in discharging their responsibilities.”

“People from Mumbai travel to Pune, Goa and southern parts of the country via Navi Mumbai. Therefore we suggested the authorities that the night shelters should be near the railway stations and bus depots in the city. However, they did not seem to be concerned about it,” he added.
