Only two apply for night school, NMMC starts enrolment drive
NAVI MUMBAI: The education department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has got only two applications for its night school, which is starting from this academic year.
Deputy municipal commissioner (education in charge) Amrish Patnigere had a meeting with the department officials and decided to conduct a door-to-door survey and campaigning to enroll more students in the night school.
The aim to start the night school was to give an opportunity to individuals who have studied at least up to Class 8.
“We have received very poor response than what we had expected. Nevertheless, we will still try to spread the message through door-to-door campaigning in lower-income group so that many children can complete their education which they had to stop due to various reasons,” said Patnigere.
The last day to submit to application was June 30 but officials said it would be extended until the end of July.
Officials said that initially the classes will be held for three hours from 6pm. Depending on the response, the duration will change.
In a survey of out-of-school children conducted last year, it was found that 1,097 children do not have access to education. Of this, 460 children were dropouts and rest have never been to school.
Officials said the night school will help dropouts complete basic education.
The admission process for Class 9 started in March and application can be availed from all secondary municipal schools.
“Those interested can register their names with either of these schools. The application forms have to be submitted to the headmasters,” he added.
