In a spe­cial drive con­ducted by the Navi Mum­bai traf­fic po­lice de­part­ment, the of­fi­cials across 15 traf­fic units caught as many as 254 of­fend­ers in a span of 15 days from May 3 to May 18. A to­tal fine of Rs3.48 lakh have been col­lected.

The drive was un­der­taken to in­ten­sively check mo­torists who are driv­ing ve­hi­cles un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol. Ac­cord­ing to the data with the Be­la­pur traf­fic po­lice head­quar­ters, a to­tal of 718 such of­fend­ers have been caught from Jan­uary to April this year and Rs6.78 lakh fines col­lected. In 2015, a to­tal of 1,286 of­fend­ers were booked for the of­fence and fines amount­ing to Rs 18.67 lakh col­lected.

In 2014 dur­ing the same pe­riod, a to­tal of 1,404 mo­torists were booked for drink driv­ing and fines amount­ing to Rs12.23 lakh were col­lected from them.

Although mo­torists know that there are some faulty parts in their ve­hi­cles, they do not bother to get them re­paired. We have been con­duct­ing the an­nual pre-mon­soon drive ev­ery year, stress­ing the im­por­tance of safety mea­sures. ARVIND SALVE, deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (traf­fic)
