DRIVE NETS 254 OFFENDERS
In a special drive conducted by the Navi Mumbai traffic police department, the officials across 15 traffic units caught as many as 254 offenders in a span of 15 days from May 3 to May 18. A total fine of Rs3.48 lakh have been collected.
The drive was undertaken to intensively check motorists who are driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. According to the data with the Belapur traffic police headquarters, a total of 718 such offenders have been caught from January to April this year and Rs6.78 lakh fines collected. In 2015, a total of 1,286 offenders were booked for the offence and fines amounting to Rs 18.67 lakh collected.
In 2014 during the same period, a total of 1,404 motorists were booked for drink driving and fines amounting to Rs12.23 lakh were collected from them.
Although motorists know that there are some faulty parts in their vehicles, they do not bother to get them repaired. We have been conducting the annual pre-monsoon drive every year, stressing the importance of safety measures. ARVIND SALVE, deputy commissioner of police (traffic)
